Bamboo, petals, and roses...

I got sick for a couple of days, brought down due to sinusitis. Spent whole wednesday in bed, recovering from the fever which was brought about by the infection that comes with *anything*-titis. Oh well, I miss swimming, and I miss the feeling of working through the ~2k workouts I was just getting used to. Maybe I should have taken more rests while I was doing my sets last Monday (August 31st). Or, I should have taken a paracetamol right away after getting off the pool. I should definitely try doing that next time I go swimming.

Oh, and thanks to my bestfriend Mapet, this brainteaser has given more life to my otherwise lifeless day: Petals around the Rose. It's definitely worth a hack at, specially for the brean-teaser lovers. I'm not one of them, but I enjoy them brain teasers (and lovers) once in a while. I've been itching to do something here at my cousin's place, especially do something about the crashed hard drive on the other "more powerful" system. Mainly because I am itching to play my ranger character in Neverwinter Nights, and aside from that I really like helping with the fixing-ups of systems here.

I've been waiting for quite a while already for Michelle to text me where and when we'll be working on their website. I was mentioning blogger as a possible online news site regarding their org, and maybe some other hosts for the content of their website. Consistency in the look and feel is something important not only to them (although I don't really know what they want for their website yet), but also to me. I never like half-baked projects, and consequently half committed groupmates/workmates. I like working in an environment where EVERYBODY is working, and once I start doing other people's work, then that's where I draw the line. I'd rather that the ship sink, if I need to act as captain when he himself (the captain) won't. I will work, when I know everyone else in the group is working -- otherwise, I won't work at all.

That's the same reason why I like the group programming contests, where there are small groups and where each person's role in the group is crucial and well defined. I miss the ACM programming contests, and subsequently my teammates. I've grown into the concept of a cohesive working unit where each person delivers and performs up to specifications. I never like doing other people's work, but I don't mind getting bulk of the work to be done. I like pressure, but when I'm the only one feeling the pressure, then I fold. Maybe that's what's wrong with me, but I don't really know how to "fix" that.

If only I could thrive under pressure alone... Which reminds me, I should complete them INC's ASAP. I'm not filing for graduation anyway, but for me to qualify for the SCUAA and the swim team next semester, I should have no more deficiencies this sem. Graduation can come right after I give a little back to UPLB. I'm not even thinking about that anymore.

Oh well... I should really get back in training form now that I'm feeling a little better.

Chill...

~~ PS: I HIGHLY RECOMMEND BUYING THE ORIGINAL ALBUM OF THE LOCAL BAND BAMBOO ENTITLED: "As the Music Plays". I'm not sure if they have a website, but for 250 Pesos only, you get great music from real musicians with taste for alternative rock. This is one great buy. I give it a 5/5, and a must have for musicians into the alternative rock scene.

I don't think that needs any fixing.. That's just being fair..

  2. I got the Petals around the Rose in two tries.

For fun, I rolled the dice once, thought long and hard for twenty minutes, used every bit of mathematical knowledge still unfried in my brain (ha ha, reminds me of ramirez' code), and consequently got the answer wrong.

I rolled the dice for a second time, took off my glasses, and, miracle of miracles, i saw the petals around the rose(s).

    Les arbres! Les arbres!

From FOMO to JOMO

Until very recently I believed that I needed to be on top of the latest news and happenings not only in my field (computer science and software engineering) but also in as many things as I can be on top of. This meant subscribing to all sorts of magazines, newsletters, YouTube channels, Twitch streamers, watching TV and live sport events, etc. — I was on top of a lot of the latest happenings, trends, news, interesting developments. I was having fun and I felt busy. What I did not feel was particularly effective nor productive. I felt like I was consuming so much information with the thought that it might be useful someday. When I was younger this wouldn’t have been an issue but I realised that ever since I’ve started taking stock of what I’ve been spending my time on, that a lot of it I’ve been spending just staying on top of things that I really didn’t need to be on top of. This article is about some of the realisations I’ve made in the course of exploring this issue of “FOMO” or

Appreciating Rizal...

Nope, this is not an academic post. More of a reflective and wrote-because-i-was-enlightened type post. Anyway, I just passed a paper on Rizal's notion of a nation according to Quibuyen (a local writer who devoted a book -- A Nation Aborted -- on his treatise on Rizal). Chapter 6 was an interesting read, and a definite eye opener. Rizal all of a sudden became interesting, especially to someone like me who could care less. It seems that most of what Rizal aims for and wrote about is still evident in today's Philippines as I see it. I wonder why I didn't get to appreciate Rizal and his work when I was still in high school -- might be the fault of the high school and the curriculum, or might be because I was still considerably immature then. I wasn't able to understand most of Rizal's writings though even if I got to reading them basically because they translated from Spanish to Filipino/Tagalog. I don't have problems with Tagalog, until you put it in writing. I

Reconnecting with people

2021 started with a a good sense of connection for me, having spent time with friends and family in a simple celebration of the oncoming year. The transition from 2020 to 2021 and being able to look back at a good part of my recent history got me thinking about how life has been for me and the family for the past decade. There’ve been a lot of people that I’ve met and become friends with while there are those that I’ve left behind and lost touch with. There’s a saying about treating old friends different from new ones, which I do appreciate now that I’m a bit older. It also means that my relationships with people that I get to spend a good amount of time with take a different shape. This reflection has given me some time and space to think about what it means to reconnect with people. Friends are the family we choose ourselves. — Edna Buchman I have the privilege of having life-long friends that I don’t always stay in regular contact with. From my perspective, if I consider you a frien
